This is Mission’s ugliest lawn. Why that’s a good thing

The drought that saw scorching temperatures well into late October is a distant memory as atmospheric rivers hit Mission.

But that doesn’t mean people can’t reflect on their water usage.

The City of Mission said this week that people should adopt good water use habits because climate change means next summer will likely be just like the summer of 2022.

To do this, Mission honoured the winners of its “ugliest lawn” contest, including photos of brown lawns due to homeowners’ not wasting water keeping them green.

“We want to say a big thank you to all who entered and remembered to conserve their water this summer,” the city said in a tweet.

With increased demands on water supplies, there’s a greater focus on conserving water.

Water can no longer be considered a limitless resource.

For most of the year, Mission receives enough rain to keep gardens adequately watered.

However, the summer months are usually dry, and our summer water use can increase significantly. Inefficient watering practices and planting gardens that are not suitable for our climate are contributing factors to the large amount of water used in the summer.

Water Restrictions are in effect from May 1 to Sept. 30 every year in order to ensure there is reliable quantity of water available, during the summer.

Water conservation tips such as letting their lawns go dormant, taking shorter showers, and turning off the tap while brushing teeth or washing dishes, in order to preserve the remaining water supply for essential uses like drinking, cooking and cleaning.
