Toddler falls through frozen pond

Boy will make full recovery; family pet did not survive

A pet dog is dead and a three year old boys is recovering in hospital after falling into freezing waters in the Steelhead area.

Emergency personnel were called to a home on Johnson Street around 11:30 a.m. Monday morning.

According to Mission RCMP spokesman, Sgt. Shaun Wright, the boy was playing outside when he followed the family dog out onto a frozen pond on the property. “The dog and boy both fell through the ice into the freezing water,” said Wright.

The mother managed to rescue her son from the lake. He briefly lost consciousness, and was taken to hospital after being receiving medical attention on site.

He is expected to make a full recovery. The family pet was not as fortunate and did not survive.
