The victim in an early morning assault in Vancouver on Friday has died.

Vancouver police were called for a 23-year-old man in medical distress near Main and Hastings streets around 1:30 a.m. on Friday (Aug. 9). Police provided emergency first aid until paramedics arrived and he was then taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

He later died in hospital, according to a second news release from police Friday evening.

Police said that investigators believe the victim and the suspect knew each other. No arrests have yet been made.

The investigation remains ongoing.
