VIDEO: Abbotsford fire crews quash house fire

Back side of house fully involved in flames when crews arrived

A house fire broke out off Sumas Way near 6th Street in Abbotsford Friday night.

Assistant fire chief Craig Leighton said the fire was called in by neighbours, who could see a large, black column of smoke rising in the sky a bit before 11 p.m.

Crews responded to the fire, blocks away from the border to find the back of the home fully involved in flames. However, before crews could successfully quash the blaze, it caused significant damage to the house.

Leighton said the blaze caused extensive fire damage to the area that was affected, and although crews were able to contain the fire to its area of origin, the rest of the structure sustained extensive smoke and water damage. Leighton said the home would be uninhabitable until major repairs could be done.

Assistant fire chief Craig Leighton said seven fire trucks from five fire halls responded, with the remaining halls paged to cover the remainder of the city during the response.

Nobody was in the home at the time of the fire and no cause has yet been determined.
