A three vehicle collision on Sunday night has sent at least five people to the hospital.

Mission RCMP, Mission Fire Rescue and BC Ambulance Services were called to Lougheed Highway, west of Chester Street just before 7 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 20) evening.

They arrived on scene to discover a three vehicle MVA. One vehicle rolled down an embankment into a construction area and landed on its side while another remained on the road with front end damage. The third vehicle involved came to rest some distance away on the edge of the bank.

According to Mission RCMP Staff Sgt. Steve Crawford, one of the vehicles crossed the centre line, striking the rear driver’s side of another vehicle, forcing the two off the road. One of those vehicles then collided with a third vehicle, on the front passenger side, before going into the ditch.

Firefighters had to extricate one person from the wreckage.

According to Crawford, all of the occupants of the cars involved were sent to hospital with what was believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

Lougheed was closed for several hours. The RCMP investigation is continuing.

The section of Lougheed Highway where the accident took place is currently single lane each way with no divider. A construction project is currently underway to widen to four lanes and divide the directions of travel in hopes of reducing the number of serious crashes that occur along this stretch.
