Despite what the calendar says, winter isn't coming. It's here.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement, warning of the first Arctic outbreak of the season to hit the Fraser Valley.

"[It] will bring bitterly cold, windy conditions and possibly snow to the south coast and Vancouver Island beginning Sunday evening," the statement reads.

Temperatures are expected to reach –5 C, followed by the possibility of snow as early as Sunday night, when weather systems come in from the Pacific.

Mission, Abbotsford and surrounding communities could see snow once more on Sunday but it isn't expected to last on the ground long, as a warmer weather system is expected to move in later next week.

"The public is encouraged to prepare for winter-like conditions," states Environment Canada.
