Woman charged with attempted murder in Nelson stabbing

Nelson police have identified Fiona Jane Coyle as the assailant who allegedly stabbed a woman five times on the corner of Baker and Stanley Streets last week.

Coyle, 49, is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.

The victim, a 29-year-old woman, received stab wounds to her arms and body. She was later transferred from Kootenay Lake Hospital to Kelowna General Hospital for surgery.

Coyle also stabbed herself during the incident, which occurred at about 5:20 p.m. Thursday.

Sgt. Brian Weber of the Nelson Police Department told the Star that Coyle holds Canadian-British dual citizenship and had only been in Nelson for three days at the time of the incident.

Police have previously stated Coyle and the victim did not know each other.

Coyle is scheduled for her first appearance in Nelson Provincial Court on Oct. 8.

Police were alerted to the incident by multiple 911 calls, and arrived on the scene to find several men restraining the suspect. One of the men suffered minor injuries.

The incident is still under investigation, and witnesses are asked to contact the police at 250-354-3919.
