LOEWEN, Catherine (Tina). Catherine (Tina) Loewen, an Abbotsford resident since 1948, died peacefully at the Menno Hospital on Jan. 11, 2013. She had been a long-time member at Level Ground Mennonite Church (formerly West Abbotsford Church) and was for many years a familiar face in MCC volunteer activities. Tina Loewen was born January 25, 1916, in the village of Pretoria, Orenburg, Russia. There she received her first two years of education, and in October, 1926, her family took advantage of an opportunity to immigrate to Canada. The family settled in Simons Valley, Alberta, where they farmed for twenty years.
On her parents' retirement in 1947, she and her parents moved to Abbotsford, settling on a 2 acre lot on Gladwin Rd, next to her brother Martin. Here she lived until the early 1970s, when she moved into an urban setting. Tina's work life included employment with MEI, Lepp's Trucking, Canadian Mennonite Bible College, and Bethel Bible School. Her adult life has been marked by a love for children's ministry, both in her church, as well as in summer camps. In her retirement years, she found fulfillment in voluntary work in the community, which included crocheting blankets for MCC. Tina found enjoyment in a number of opportunities to travel internationally, to South America and to India, as well as across Canada. As she never married, she took a keen interest in the lives of her nephews and nieces, and was generous in support of those whose lives were directed to voluntary service. Tina was pre-deceased by her parents, Abraham J. and Maria (Eitzen) Loewen, two sisters, and nine brothers. She is survived by her youngest sister, Anna Barg, and many nephews and nieces. Tina had a simple but enduring faith that is best captured in a verse she claimed early in her life: "My God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus." A memorial service for Tina Loewen will take place at 2 pm on January 18, 2013, at Level Ground Mennonite Church, 31216 King Rd. Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to MCC BC.
