Apr 25, 1937 - Dec 25, 2017
Heather Stewart, of Mission, B.C. - formerly of Soowahlie Reserve; Chilliwack; Burnaby; Vancouver; and Brandon, Manitoba - was an inspiration to many and compassionate to all. She passed away on Christmas Day, 2017, at The Residence, in Mission, B.C., at the age of 80.

Heather was born in Manitoba on April 25, 1937, to her mother Margaret Jane McDonald Anderson and father, John Franklin Fisher Stewart. Her formative years were spent in Manitoba, working motherhood in Vancouver, then later in Chilliwack, she grew professionally as an educator and finally in Mission, she dedicated herself to community service, as a District of Mission Councillor. She was always warm, open and welcoming to people from all walks of life and dedicated to social justice.

Left to grieve are Heather's daughter, Melanie Coates; son, Greg Coates; daughter-in-law, Monika; and grandchildren: Vincenzo, Michelle, Geoff and Greg.

Heather is also survived by her step-children: Heather, Rand, Earl and Jay Commodore. She is predeceased by her beloved step-son Drew Commodore.

The family is greatly appreciative of the support and friendship of Heather's group of "S.G.s", her "BC Grads" and above all of Barbara Fehrmann, whose kindness and attentive care never wavered during the highs and lows of Heather's final months.

Cremation has taken place, and a private service will be held in Mission. A more public gathering is planned for spring, once the flowers begin to bloom again in Mission.

A bench bearing a plaque honouring Heather's legacy will be purchased, and the location revealed at her celebration of life. If so desired, memorial donations may be directed to Mission Communities in Bloom.

Forever in our hearts and minds.
