Feb 29, 1924 – Feb 5, 2008
Joe Atkinson, a long time resident of Deroche, passed peacefully and suddenly at home at the age of 83, two weeks shy of his 84th birthday. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mae, his daughter Elizabeth Regier (Walter) of Abbotsford, son Ralph (Helen) of Mission, daughter Kathy Atkinson of Mission, son Kevin (Debbie) of Nanaimo, 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Joe was born in England and moved to British Columbia at a young age. He served overseas as a gunner with the Canadian Army in Europe from 1943 to 1946. Joe was employed as a mobile operator by Canadian Forest Products Canfor Division at Harrison Mills from 1947 until his retirement in 1989. He loved the outdoors and spent much of his time camping and gardening. He spent many happy “coffee times” sitting in his chair outside enjoying the fresh air and beautiful scenery. He loved to watch the great grandchildren at play.
A Celebration of Joe’s life will be held on Monday, February 11, 2008 at 11:00 am at Ross Road Community Church, 3160 Ross Rd, Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Abbotsford Blind and Visually Impaired Society, c/o Abbotsford Community Services, 2420 Montrose Ave, Abbotsford V2S 3S9 or the BC Heart & Stroke Foundation.
