July 14, 1925 - May 11, 2019
Maria Hofer of Mission, BC passed away in her sleep May 11, 2019 at the age of 93. Maria was born on June 14, 1925 in Englfing, Austria and immigrated to Canada in 1955 where she settled in Kitimat, BC with her husband Johann and her son John.
Maria was predeceased by her son John in 2001 and Johann in 2006.
Maria is survived by her daughter-in-law Mary (Greg); her grandchildren Mike (Jennifer), Debbie (Paul), Tina (Trevor) and great-grandchildren Harrison, Madeline, Jackson and Maya who will always fondly remember her as “Nikki Oma”.
She will be sadly missed by all, including family in Austria and countless friends in Mission, Kitimat and abroad. Maria was a very social person who enjoyed family gatherings and the company of others. She was selfless and always put her family first. Her character, kindness and generosity were returned to her by the many friends and relationships she developed. Maria worked as a kindergarten teacher in Austria and as a gardener for the District of Kitimat in BC. In 1980, Maria and Johann moved to Mission to be closer to their family. In her younger years, she was an avid skier who loved the mountains. She also enjoyed cooking and gardening and won the Mission Communities in Bloom award for best garden at the age of 82. Throughout her life, her garden and her beloved dogs gave her much joy.
Thanks to Dr. Hughes and Cedarbrooke Retirement Residence for your care and compassion.
Private family service to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Maria's memory to SAINTS animal rescue or the Christine Morrison Hospice at Mission Memorial Hospital.
