November 19, 1925 - January 27, 2022
In loving memory ~
Mary passed away peacefully in Mission Hospital after 96 full and active years. She was born on Nov. 19, 1925 in Gull Lake, Sask. to Mary Ann (Patchell) and Evan Hoyt Johnston. She was the youngest of five children (Malcolm, Ruth, Hoyt and Gordon). She had many fond memories growing up in Gull Lake.
In 1943 Mary and her mom moved to Trail, BC where she attended Trail Business College. Mary met her dear husband, Bernard Alteare Johns, and they married in 1948. She worked at West Kootenay Power; Bern was a school teacher. In 1960 they moved to North Vancouver. Mary was a secretary at B.C. Hydro, North Vancouver City Hall and Council of Forest Industries. They moved to Abbotsford in 1987 then Mary moved to Mission in 2010 after Bern's passing on Nov. 24, 2008.
Mary and Bern's love of travel brought them to Britain, Hawaii, Alaska, Panama Canal and Asia. They also spent 13 wonderful winters in Arizona. Both were active in the Order of the Eastern Star; Mary was the organist for many years. She enjoyed many hobbies, but in in her last few years at Cedarbrooke, her passion was playing pool with her female friends.
Mary will be dearly missed by nieces Vivian Black of California and Heather Sittig of Victoria, great niece Joanne Ambrosio of Castlegar, great nephew Clay Liber of Nelson, Ginny Brownlie of Castlegar (Ginny was like a daughter to Mary) and dear friend Margaret Garnier of Maple Ridge. The family would like to thank the staff at Chartwell Cedarbrooke; doctors, nurses and staff at Mission Hospital as well as paramedics for their wonderful care.
