September 18, 1921 - January 2, 2023
It is with a great deal of sadness, the family of Mary Lucas announces the passing of their dear mother, on January 2, 2023 aged 101. Mary, the eldest of four children, was born in Toronto but her family soon moved westward. First stop was Calgary where her best friend and sister Ariel was born and then they moved to Vancouver where her brothers John & Alan joined the family. Mary and her husband Art were married 40 years and retired to Mission in 1974 after a lifetime of working and raising four kids abroad in New York, Santiago, Chile and New Delhi, India.
Mary was a spiritual person who attended St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Mission for many decades where she was a dependable and involved Elder. She was a sociable person who had a great sense of humour and loved to play all sorts of games; her grandchildren called her the "games gram". She was an avid gardener who also made beautiful flower arrangements, was a creative cook, and enjoyed participating in various groups including the church ladies' group, several Bridge clubs and regularly bowled 5 pin in the days when Mission had a bowling alley.
Their home in Mission was a frequent gathering point for family and far-flung friends usually accompanied by a sumptuous meal. What a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend she has been! She will be remembered for her warm smile, grace, kind heart, humour and competitive spirit. Her clarity of mind and love of playing cards endured right to the end. In fact, she played her last game of crib in early December 2022.
Mary became the matriarch of her extended family. She knew she was much loved by them and her wide circle of friends.
As a woman of faith, she has now gone to join her beloved husband, one daughter, all of her siblings, countless friends and all those before her. She is survived by 3 of her 4 children, 4 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 6 nieces and 6 nephews.
Thank you, mom, for all your love and guidance. You are dearly missed.
A service will be held at St Paul's Presbyterian Church later in 2023. Condolences may be forwarded through Woodlawn Mission Funeral Home, www.woodlawnfh-mission.com
If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to the charity of their choice or St Paul's Presbyterian Church.
