Maynard Julian LEELAND

April 1, 2006

Oct. 2, 1938 - April 1, 2006

Maynard Julian Leeland of Abbotsford, was born in Dawson Creek, BC to Palmer and Mabel Leeland, homesteaders in the Clayhurst area of the Peace River Country.

Maynard passed away at the Christine Morrison Hospice in his 68th year, ending a 10-year journey with cancer that finally paralyzed and consumed him. A very special thank you to all the special staff and volunteers who attended to him so lovingly in his last months. He felt so very blessed.

Maynard married Betty (Ward) in Claremont, ON, in 1968, his beloved bride for almost 38 years (April 20). Their sons Neil (Amber) and Dean (Marina) and daughter Jennifer will miss the love and guidance of a proud father. As well, he was a fond Papa to many young grandchildren. He also leaves sister Lucille Kostyk (Russell), Athabasca, AB; brother-in-law Ray (Janice), Keene, ON; and 4 nieces and 4 nephews.

After 10 years in business at Mile "0" of the Alaska Highway in Dawson Creek, he began a 17 year career with the Ministry of Highways, making friends throughout the province. After "privatization" in 1989, he became the Mechanical Superintendent for the Corp. of Delta, until disabled by a stroke in 1995.

Maynard was a well known woodcarver, winning countless ribbons for the nature he loved and brought to life.

Thank you to kind neighbours and friends at home and church who have lent their support, especially the young men who faithfully came to meet with Maynard for prayer or Bible study. To the phenomenal homecare nurses as well as the numerous dedicated doctors who cared for and encouraged him over the years. Because of his long struggle with prostate cancer, in lieu of flowers, we invite you to donate to Prostrate Cancer Research at the BC Cancer Agency, 600 W. 10th Ave., Vancouver, BC V5Z 4E6 or the Christine Morrison Hospice, 7324 Hurd St., Mission, BC
