April 1, 1924 - April 30, 2024

Our beloved mother, Patricia, passed away peacefully at home, her family by her side. She was born in Manitoba to parents Fred and Kathleen Swanton (nee Hawkins) on April 1, 1924, 6 weeks premature. Her early years on the farm cemented her lifelong love of horses and dogs. She had an enduring devotion to church, responding to an innate and unwavering faith. Following her family's move to Mission, she showed an aptitude for the creative arts. She enjoyed drawing, knitting, embroidery and sewing, creating countless garments for herself and family.

Pursuing an interest in fashion and dressmaking, she moved to Vancouver to attend the Academy of Useful Arts, after graduating with a diploma in 1942. She had many happy memories of life at the YWCA, attending dances held for servicemen and riding horses in Stanley Park. Encouraged by a friend, she moved to Edmonton where she met her first husband, Cameron at a church youth group. They had five children together.

After moving to Victoria, Patricia eventually raised her children as a single parent, working tirelessly to provide a warm and loving environment. In 1976, she reconnected with James Fleming, a family friend from her youth, who was also divorced and had two children, Cherie and Bill. Patricia and Jim were married for 40 years, during which she was never idle. Aside from painting, bowling, canning and knitting, she also sewed for her family and friends. She entered her sewing in local fairs and bazaars, where she received many accolades, ribbons and trophies. Pat travelled extensively, visiting over 110 countries and six continents.

A lifelong member of the Anglican Church, she held many offices including the Altar Guild, ACW, the Mincemeat Crew, Bazaar, etc. She also generously supported a great many worthy causes. She truly deserved being awarded The Order of the Diocese of New Westminster for her years of service to the church. She also generously donated to many other worthy causes. With her indomitable spirit she approached her life with grace, a legendary sense of humour and lightning-quick wit - she was still joking with us at 100 years of age. She will be remembered for her bright blue eyes, gentle nature, warm smile and sense of duty.

Patricia is predeceased by her parents, Fred and Kathleen Swanton, husband Jim Fleming, and brother Dick. She is survived by her sister, Norah Creelman. Left to mourn are her children Connie, Christopher, Janice (Michael), Audrey (Rick), Leslie, stepchildren Cherie and Bill, 10 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and dear friend Judy, whose weekly visits were not only appreciated by the entire family, but also maintained a cherished link to her church. Special thanks to all the lovely care aides who attended to Mum's personal needs, allowing her to stay at home.

The date for Patricia's memorial service will be posted later.
