Patrick William (Pat) McWhinney

October 1, 1953 - April 13, 2017

After a fierce but short battle with cancer, Pat passed away suddenly on April 13, 2017 at the ARHCC at the age of 63 with his loving wife Gillian and sons by his side.

Pat was the youngest son of the late Joe and Pearl McWhinney, and a long time resident of Abbotsford. He was a devoted nephew and guardian to Hazel Jones, and his late Aunt Vi Mercer. Our Pat was a loving and dedicated husband, proud and ever present father and grandfather, faithful brother, and a generous, caring uncle and friend. He is survived by Gillian (nee Skinner), his precious wife of 43 years, sons Ryan (Anna), Trevor (Joey) and Colin (Jessica), beloved grandchildren Avery, Sami, Katelyn, Maya and Matthew, brother Michael (Kathleen) and sister Sheryl (Mark), many nieces, nephews and innumerable admiring friends who sorely miss him. Pat was born in Vancouver and in 1961 moved to Abbotsford from Burnaby with his parents, brother and sister . He attended Abbotsford Elementary, Philip Sheffield and Abbotsford Junior and Senior Secondary Schools. He joined the telephone company after graduation, becoming the fifth member of McWhinney family to do so. Pat retired in 2010 after a 40 year career as a technician with CT&S, BC Tel, and finally TELUS. He worked in Victoria and Nanaimo before returning to Abbotsford with Gillian in 1977. Pat enjoyed spending time with family and friends and generously helped out with everything from home renovations, automotive and computer repairs, swimming pool - he could fix anything! Pat spent countless hours volunteering in support of the Abbotsford Rugby Football Club, the Epileptic Society and supporting Gillian and the Fraser Valley Stage. Pat also became an adept investor. Pat will always be lovingly remembered by all who knew him. There will be no formal service at Pat's request but a celebration of Pat's life will be held from 2-5pm on May 7, 2017 at the Abbotsford Exhibition Park (Cadet Bldg), 32470 Haida Drive, Abbotsford, BC.You are encouraged to share your memories of Pat at email: mcwhinney@telus.net
