August 7, 2019
Born January 23, 1930, entered the presence of the Lord August 7th, 2019 at the age of 89. Joyce was predeceased by her loving husband of 71 years, Tom Stokes on February 6, 2019.
She is survived by, and will be greatly missed by, her five children – Judy (Ian) Rutherford, Carol (Harald) Leukefeld, Cher (Rusty) Merriman, Nancy (Andrei) Suceava, and Mark (Leanne) Stokes. Also missing their Grandma/GG are 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Joyce is also survived by her much loved sister Lynn, and many loved and treasured nieces and nephew.
Her family will remember her as a loving and devoted mother with a servant heart. Her generosity was received by many, whether it was monetary, a pot of soup, an encouraging word, or welcoming smile. She enjoyed a variety of crafts over the years and many were recipients of her talent. She also loved to write poetry and children’s stories. Joyce loved to share her faith with those she met and thus impacted many lives. She had a beautiful voice and loved to sing; lead many women’s groups, spoke at many events, and taught Sunday School. Joyce and Tom were great supporters of their local church and many missions around the world.
Joyce was born in Pleasant Home, Manitoba, the fifth of six children. She excelled in school but at the age of 15 she moved to Winnipeg to work at the Nutty Club, a candy and popcorn factory. Her sisters invited her to move to B.C. and on November 16, 1945 she boarded the train to head west. She worked at Mission Cannery and made friends who introduced her to Tom, the love of her life. They married in July 1947 and all their children were born in Mission. Joyce and Tom lived in many communities throughout BC but always returned to Mission.
Details for a Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
