Raymond James Johnston passed away peacefully at Mission Memorial Hospital September 15, 2014. Ray is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Shirley Johnston, daughter Pam (George) Veenbaas, son-in-law Fred Kruse; grandchildren Mike Veenbaas, Lisa (Lance) Bosman, Brenda (Jeff) Hutchinson, Brian (Melissa) Kruse and Graham (Mae) Kruse plus 9 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He is predeceased by daughters Nancy Johnston, Beverly Kruse and his brother Bob and Bob's wife Barbara Johnston. Ray was an active member of the Mission Community. Listed here are just a few of his many accomplishments: joined the Volunteer fire dept. in 1951 and became chief in 1974 and retired in 1978, started with Mission ambulance in 1965 to 1990, was chairman of Mission Fire Prevention for 9 years, Mission councilor for 4 years, President of Mission Agricultural Assoc. for 4 years, director of the Senior Center for 9 years, involved with McConnell Creek Farmers Institute for 25 years and Freeman of the City of Mission in 1996. Ray and his wife Shirley loved to go camping, fishing and spending many a week at Barnes Lake in Ashcroft. A visitation will be held at Woodlawn Mission Funeral Home 7386 Horne St. on Friday, September 19, 2014 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at Woodlawn Mission Funeral Home at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 20, 2014 with a tea to follow. The family would like to thank the many Doctors and Nurses that cared for him at the Mission Hospital. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Mission Fire Dept. or Charity of Choice.
