ARMSTRONG (NEE: HAYES)

July 16, 1937 – May 14, 2006

Vivian, much loved mother, sister and grandmother passed away May 14th , 2006 at MSA Hospital, Abbotsford, BC, after a long battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Vivian was born in Creelman, Saskatchewan, on July 16, 1937 to Iola Mahalia (Wallace) and Edward Mitchell Hayes. The eldest of three children, Vivian grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 1955, she married Cecil Walter Rogers and moved to northern Manitoba, raising her son Stuart and daughter Deirdre while working as a cook in her father-in-law’s logging camp.

In 1966, Vivian moved to B.C. with her second husband, Ray Armstrong, where she gave birth to daughter Sherry and son Roy in Vancouver. In the early 70’s, Vivian began a long career with BC Hydro/BC Transit that lasted almost 30 years. She retired in 1997 to spend more time with her grandchildren and to pursue an interest in painting and crafts. Never able to sit still for long, Vivian began volunteering with the Health Care Auxiliary Societies, including Mission Health Care Auxiliary Society (in positions ranging from Treasurer to President) and was most recently the Treasurer of the British Columbia Association of Health Care Auxiliaries. She truly enjoyed the travel and the many friendships she made through the Auxiliary. Vivian always had a sparkle in her beautiful blue eyes and a joke or a laugh for anyone who didn’t take themselves too seriously.

Vivian is survived by her son Stuart (Patricia), daughter Deirdre (Marty), daughter Sherry (Bruce), and son Roy (Janet). She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren (Alanna, Michael, Sara, and Ryan) and her influence will be felt throughout their lives. Vivian is also survived by her brother Wayne (Rita) and her sister Diana (Jim).

The family would like to thank the nurses at 2 West, MSA Hospital, her family physician Dr. Arun Mehra, and her specialist, Dr. Pearce Wilcox, of St. Paul’s Hospital. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the St. Paul’s Foundation – Pulmonary Fibrosis Research, to help fight this terrible disease.

Memorial service is to be held at 2pm, Friday, May 19, 2006, at Woodlawn Mission Funeral Home, 7386 Horne Street, Mission, BC. Reception to follow. Please bring your memories and come celebrate the life of this incredible woman – who was slight in physical stature but had a HUGE heart and spirit.
