LETTER: Community steps up to help boys and girls in need of a mentor

January and February have been a whirlwind of processing and screening new volunteer applicants.

On December 17, 2015 the Mission Record published an article asking the residents of Mission to step up and consider becoming a mentor to one of the 17 children on our wait list.

And step up they did!

January and February have been a whirlwind of processing and screening new volunteer applicants, and choosing the lucky children they will be partnered with.

So far, six Mission children (three boys and three girls) have received New Year’s “Bigs” with a couple more volunteer applications slowly trickling in over recent weeks.

Our fundraiser pub night at the 14th Ave. Pub on Feb. 6 was a sell-out, and we are grateful to everyone who showed up to support us including several city councillors.

We will always be in need of volunteers, as we get parents calling daily asking to sign their children up, but the overwhelming support we have experienced in the past two months has given us hope and confidence that we will be able to serve more Mission kids in 2016 than last year.

Thank you, especially to the Mission Record for always stepping up and sharing stories of what we are doing in the community.
