The B.C. Golden Gloves event hit the ring at Durieu Elementary in Mission last Friday and Saturday, with boxers from across the province and Alberta competing.

The Abbotsford-Mission Boxing Club organized and hosted both nights, which were a huge success,  said AMBC head coach Dale Gatin.

On Friday night ,there were 10 bouts, including nine-year-old Jacob Racette from Abbotsford making his in-ring debut against Tyson Moutray from Nanaimo. The pair fought three one-minute rounds, and both boxers were declared winners for their efforts in the ring.

Also on Friday, Fort St. John’s Ashley Roubie fought Maddy Swansen from Edmonton in a Golden Gloves final. The fight went the distance, with Swansen earning the split-decision victory. The match was voted the best female bout of the tournament.

In Friday’s main event, Ben Alverez from Edmonton fought Brian Colwell from Sooke, in a heavyweight Golden Gloves final. Colwell had lost to Alverez in their two previous match-ups, but it was a different story on Friday. Colwell earned the win and was also named best boxer of the night.

On Saturday night, there was an even larger crowd with standing room only, for 11 bouts.

In the Elite Novice final, Nike Blackmore from Nanaimo fought Colton Huberts from Sumas Mountain Boxing. Both boxers threw everything they had in three action-packed three-minute rounds. The match was voted the best novice bout of the tournament.

The main event featured Jag Seehra from Nanaimo vs. Leo Samarelli from Queensborough in a Golden Gloves final at 141 pounds. Seehra eventually won the fight, and he was named best Golden Boy of the tournament. Roubie from Fort St. John was voted best Golden Girl.
