Badminton: Vancouver-Squamish claims gold in team play

Medal matches take place at Hatzic Secondary in team badminton play.

Vancouver-Squamish (Zone 5) claimed the gold medal in team badminton action on Sunday morning at Hatzic Secondary.

The squad defeated Fraser River Delta (Zone 4) four matches to one.

The bronze medal went to Fraser Valley (Zone 3) with a 5-2 victory over Vancouver Island – Central Coast (Zone 6).

Team badminton involves each zone playing a series of singles and doubles matches (a match is the best of three games) with the win going to the team taking the best of seven matches.

Zone 5 took an early 2-0 lead in the gold-medal matchup, but Zone 4 closed the gap with a win in the third match.

Match 4 involved an intense battle between Yoko Ujike (Zone 5) and Jessica Yuen (Zone 4), with Ujike taking the win 21-11, 19-21 and 21-12.

A 21-15, 21-11 victory in doubles play secured the medal win for Zone 5 in the fifth match.

In addition to Ujike, the gold-medal team consisted of Konrad Van Heukelom, Michelle Yeung, Boris Zhu, Ray Dong, Maddie Buss, Mandindu De Silva, Hannah Wang, Rachelle Yau, and Victor Huang.

Other team badminton results from Sunday morning saw Thompson-Okanagan (Zone 2) defeat Cariboo – North East (Zone 8) for fifth and six spots, while North West (Zone 7) beat Kootenays (Zone 1) for seventh and eighth positions.
