BC Bounce bringing girls basketball program to Mission

The Mission Rec League is accepting registration for girls with limited spots available

A Fraser Valley basketball club is looking to grow the sport in Mission.

With a boys program already at capacity, BC Bounce basketball is starting a girls program in Mission set to begin in February.

The organization offers to train young athletes twice a week with a focus on skill development and in-game experience in respective sessions. The kids are divided into two groups: kindergarten through fourth grade and fifth grade through eighth grade.

The boys program has over 40 kids registered in Mission with more on the wait list. The Abbotsford branch has upwards of 120 kids signed up, with programs in Chilliwack as well.

Mission sessions are hosted at Heritage Park, but BC Bounce is seeking a larger gym since it is limited to two hoops. Former UFV Cascades coach Pat Lee is a founder of the organization.

“We need a bigger gym facility,” Lee said. “A lack of hoops limits numbers for the program — we only go to 40 because I’m more kid orientated.”

BC Bounce is a year-long program going from September to September with leagues running in the spring, summer, fall, and twice in the winter. It features a full team of coaches and has development programs and club teams beyond the rec leagues.

“BC Bounce has established a new direction by working with the [Fraser Valley] in bringing basketball to boys and girls in Kindergarten through Grade 12. The hope is to develop players that love the game and want to become the best they can be as they dream dreams of playing for their school teams and beyond,” their website states.

Mission leagues will have sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Tuesday session will be focused on skills with the players learning the fundamentals of basketball: dribbling, passing, shooting, layups, one-on-one and defense. Thursdays will be game day with three-on-three games

Registration for the girls’ winter program (Feb. 14-April 20) costs $245 and potential participants can register online at BCBounce.com.
