Ty Ronning and James Malm look for a rebound against Brandon Wheat Kings goaltender Logan Thompson during the Giants 2-1 overtime victory on Dec. 2. The Giants could not build on that victory

Vancouver manages weekend split, beating Brandon in OT before losing to Kamloops

Goals less than two minutes apart in the second period sent the Kamloops Blazers to a 5-2 victory over the visiting Vancouver Giants.

The Giants were at the Sandman Centre in Kamloops on Saturday night, hoping to build off a 2-1 overtime victory the night before at home against the Brandon Wheat Kings.

But Vancouver mustered just 17 shots on goals in the loss, dropping their record in the Western Hockey League to 11-17-1-1.

Kamloops’ Ondrej Vala and Vancouver’s James Malm traded goals in the first period and then the Blazers’ Rudolfs Balcers and the Giants’ Thomas Foster did the same early in the second.

Deven Sideroff and Spencer Bast would give the home side a 4-2 lead with goals less than two minutes apart before the second intermission and Vancouver had no answer.

Quinn Benjafield tallied the home side’s final goal into an empty net.

Kamloops went 2-for-4 on the man advantage and outshot Vancouver 33-17.

The Giants will look to get back on track as they host the Everett Silvertips on Friday (Dec. 9) and the Spokane Chiefs on Saturday (Dec. 10) at the Langley Events Centre on Ugly Christmas Sweater Weekend with Vancouver wearing special jerseys for both games.

Vancouver has yet to beat a U.S. Division foe this season, going 0-7-0-1 in their first eight games.
