The Abbotsford/Mission Boxing Club will host a 15 bout event on Saturday night (April 9) at FraserView Learning Centre (32444 7th Ave.).

Doors open at 6 p.m. with the competition beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 and are available at the door.

“This is a sanctioned event,” explained Dale Gatin, head coach of the club.

“There’s going to be athletes from all over the province coming and we also have a club from Edmonton, Alberta coming.”

One of the reasons the boxing matches take place at the learning centre is that Gatin has been working with the students there.

“We go once a week and try to give the kids a more positive thing to do. Boxing is a good sport because you can get out all those frustrations and get a good workout,” he explained, adding it also teaches discipline and helps with self esteem.

Presently, five to 10 kids attend the weekly boxing sessions.

The live event is an opportunity to show the students what the sport is all about

“Hopefully it will peak their interest more… and they can understand how much discipline and fitness it takes.”

Gatin said the students are just there to watch adding the bouts are meant to be inspirational.

“Maybe they will watch and think, ‘I need to quit smoking or get in shape.’”
