HPSS girls make AAA provincials

The Heritage Park Highlanders qualified for the AAA provincials for the 11th time in the team’s 14-year history at that level.According to coach Frank Chan, the girls played some tough matches and finished sixth at the Fraser Valleys, winning a wildcard game that catapulted them into the competition, which starts March 9.The Highlanders beat Lord Tweedsmuir 65-50 Feb. 24, then went on to take apart Yale 71-42 the following day.Elgin Park squeaked past HPSS 55-52 which put the Mission team into the wildcard spot against Kelowna. The local girls emerged victorious with a narrow 66-63 win.“The kids worked really hard and we’ve gone through lots of adversity,” said Chan, adding the team’s goal every year is to make it to the provincials. The provincials are held at Capilano College and HPSS plays sixth-ranked Argyle first.“They’re big and athletic and we’re not so big and not so athletic, but we’ll play our best,” said Chan.
