The Mission Icebreakers took the Abbotsford Pilots to game six of the best-of-seven series

The Mission Icebreakers’ inability to capitalize on the power play led the junior B hockey team to lose game six 4-0 of the best-of-seven series against cross-river rivals the Abbotsford Pilots. The Icebreakers pushed the Pilots at every turn and managed to battle back midway through the series to make their opponents fight hard for every point.“It was a good series,” said Icebreakers’ coach Craig Sherbaty. “Our power play did really well the first two game, but in game six it just felt like nothing was clicking.”The Feb. 24 game at the Mission Leisure Centre saw the Icebreakers get scored on early and continue to be dominated by Abbotsford.Mission had a five-minute man advantage and the Pilots wound up scoring, said Sherbaty.“That set the tone for the whole game.”Pilots head coach Jim Cowden called the Icebreakers a “pesky” foe, and hoped the series would serve as a learning experience for his team.“They battled us hard, and it could have gone either way,” he said.Sherbaty said he’s proud of his team and how they put the group ahead of individual performance, all while playing solidly in front of large home crowds at the Leisure Centre.“I really think the team this year was really competitive against all the others. We were right there,” he said.
