Local boxers excel at Diamond Belt event

Abbotsford-Mission Boxing Club fighters go perfect 2-0 at Saturday’s event

Boxers from all over the province descended on the Quality Hotel and Conference Centre in Abbotsford for the Diamond Belt event on Saturday night.

The show saw a total of eight fights, with Abbotsford-Mission Boxing Club boxers going a perfect 2-0 on the evening.

The fifth bout of the card saw AMBC fighter Bronson Volker defeat Maple Ridge’s William Kilsby in a 95 lbs Junior A Novice division exhibition bout.

AMBC head coach Dale Gatin said it was a good showing for the 13-year-old.

“Bronson used his head movement very well to make his opponent miss and was very good at counter punching,” he said. “His conditioning was excellent, as he was able to push the pace all three rounds.”

Bronson’s older brother, Tyson Volker, continued the strong night for the AMBC with am exhibition win over Surrey’s Alson Niu in the 152 lbs Elite Novice division.

Gatin praised Tyson’s performance on Saturday.

“Tyson turned 19 this year so he is in the elite division, and in that division you can fight against 19- to 40-year-olds, which is a big difference from the younger division,” he said. “So Tyson fought a 25-year-old and controlled the fight all three rounds, pushed his opponent backwards and threw beautiful punches throughout. In the second round he gave his opponent an eight count with an overhand right and left hook to the body to send his opponent to the canvas. After three rounds, Tyson was declared the winner.”

Other winners at the event included: Powell River’s Jaxon Pangburn, Liam Epp from Kamloops, Vancouver’s Spencer Viehweger, Surrey’s Mohammed Elhag, Clay Potter from Victoria and Sabri Faruk from New Westminster.

Gatin also thanked the Boxing BC officials, event volunteers, the ringside doctor and the fans for packing the building.

The next AMBC event occurs in November and is called Bronze Gloves. More details on that event will be released in the coming months.
