Mission athletes help UFV teams

Mission’s Peter Van Brederode logged nine digs Friday as the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades volleyball team lost 3-2 to the College of the Rockies Avalanche.

A second game against the same opponents Saturday saw Van Brederode continue his strong play as he notched 12 more digs.

However, the Avalanche swept the Cascades 3-2, which placed the UFV squad in sixth place overall with a 4-8 record.

Aieisha Luyken contributed 12 points in UFV’s overtime losing effort against the University of Winnipeg Wesman, 79-70.

The Wesmen came out strong and established an early nine-point lead as the first quarter ended. The Cascades played well in the second quarter and went into the locker room trailing by six points. The third quarter might have been the best UFV has played all year defensively as they held the high scoring Wesmen to six points, while scoring 20 and taking a eight point lead going into the final quarter. Winnipeg would come back to tie the game and force overtime and eventually took the win.

This loss drops the Cascades to eighth place in the Canada West division with an 8-11 record.
