The Mission BC Winter Games opening ceremonies took place Thursday night, drawing more than 1,000 people to the event centre, set up at Mission Raceway Park.

Young athletes from across the province converged on Mission for the event, which spans Feb. 20-23, and will see B.C. youth compete in 18 sports.

A number of speeches from local dignitaries, such as Mission Mayor Ted Adlem, Mission BC Games board of directors president Brian Antonson, Olympic medalist Brent Hayden, and Abbotsford Mayor Bruce Banman, punctuated the event.
