The District of Mission’s 125th anniversary kicked off with a bang at the Mission Granite Curling Club over the weekend.

The three-day event, known as the   McLachlan bonspiel, was played in the memory of Mary Rockwell.

The format of the event features at least two experience curlers teaming up with at least two inexperienced curlers. This year’s event drew 22 teams, with 10 walk-on brand new curlers hitting the ice for the very first time. Curlers ranged in age from nine to 80 at the event.

Competitors threw rocks on Friday night, Saturday all-day and Sunday morning, with the fivesome of Mike Freeman, Daryll Hetherington, Josh Littler, Dustin Littler and Blair Hetherington winning the A event.

Winning the B event was the team of Fred Moon, Ken Moon, Shelly Mayert, Ron Mayert and Shirley Moon. The C event champions were Vinnie Latimer, Kathy Walls, Jacquie Truchon and Andy Bullock.

The McLachlan bonspiel is the final event for the 2016-17 season for the MGCC, with an awards banquet scheduled for April 22 starting at 6 p.m. at the Mission Curling Club lounge. The club’s annual general meeting then occurs on May 17.
