Mission water polo star wins gold medal

Devyani McLaren played with a team from California this summer

Mission’s Devyani McLaren scored numerous goals and played tough defence during the 2014 Junior Olympics Water Polo Championships this past weekend (July 31-Aug. 3) in California.

Her efforts helped her team, SET Pink, win the gold medal in the U16 Gold category.

McLaren, who has lived in Mission with her family for the past 12 years, was selected to be a part of a top team from southern California after training with the group for six weeks this summer.

The local water polo athlete swam with the Mission Marlins before joining water polo. McLaren is a Grade 10 student at Meadow Ridge School in Maple Ridge. Her home team is Fraser Valley Hi Performance and she has made appearances in the Canadian national championships for the past three years.
