Blake Clease was the hero in overtime on Saturday night (Jan. 7) as he helped the Mission City Outlaws to a 3-2 win over the Richmond Sockeyes at the Mission Leisure Centre.

Richmond outshot Mission in each period and finished with a 34-28 advantage. However, Max Fowle made 32 saves in the victory for the Outlaws, earning the second star of the game. Clease’s overtime winner was accompanied by an assist and he earned the first star while Jayden Martin added two assists for Mission.

The Sockeyes entered the game as the one-seed in the PJHL’s Tom Shaw conference and split the previous two games with Mission this season.

The first period was scoreless and Bryce Strandt opened the scoring three and a half minutes into the second with an unassisted goal. Austin Charlton tied it later with his second goal of the season.

Brendan Chabot put the Outlaws ahead 2-1 just over eight minutes into the third period but Logan McCallum’s third penalty of the game allowed Gavin Bains to equalize for Richmond on the power play less than two minutes later.

Just 20 seconds into overtime, Mission’s Cayden Karcioglu put a shot on net and Clease buried the rebound to provide the Outlaws with a win.

Mission improves to 20-15 on the season and maintain their standing in the Harold Brittain conference in third place with 40 points. The Outlaws are 10 points back of the second place Ridge Meadows Flames and just two points ahead of the fourth place Chilliwack Jets.

The Outlaws visit Burnaby Winter Club tonight (Jan. 8) for a match-up with the Grandview Steelers at 7:15 p.m.
