Mission is going to get a new tennis court.

On July 26, members of the Mission Tennis Club and representatives from Mission council met at Centennial Park for a brief cheque presentation.

The local club donated $10,000 towards the project to create a new tennis court at the Centennial Park Courts.

The tennis club has been actively working on this project since 2016 and representatives say they are “extremely happy” that construction is in the works.

The tennis club is having an outstanding season this year. Its membership has risen dramatically over the past year and the group was able to provide free coaching for kids over three Saturdays in June.

“We had a great fun tournament in July,” said Mark Gervais.

“We also have our first wheelchair athlete join the club. Barry Henderson is a competitor that has had great success against the top tennis wheelchair athletes in Canada.”

Next up for the club is an inter-club tournament against Maple Ridge. The year-end tournament is scheduled for Aug. 26 and on the September long weekend.
