The Fraser Valley Conservancy (FVC) is launching a nature-focused educational initiative for the Fraser Valley.

Known as the Nature Stewardship School, this will be a series of public workshops where the community can learn a variety of skills to help local wildlife.

The Nature Stewardship School workshops will encompass a range of interesting topics.

To start, the conservancy will be hosting an introductory Stewardship 101 class. During this fun and educational evening – held in Mission on Dec. 4 – participants will learn the basics of how to identify local wildlife habitat, the species that live there, and top stewardship tips. Participants are encouraged to bring any nature-related questions for discussion.

“We learned from our Gardening with Native Plants workshops last year that there is a huge interest in learning how people can help nature, especially in light of the overwhelming pressures of a changing climate,” said Joanne Neilson of the Fraser Valley Conservancy. “This inspired us to take our workshops to a broader level.”

Additional Stewardship 101 workshops are being planned for Abbotsford and Chilliwack in early 2020.

Other future workshops will include gardening for pollinators, lawn alternatives, and healthy habitats for amphibians. Anyone interested in learning how to care for nature is welcome. No previous knowledge is required.

The Nature Stewardship School is by the FVC, which works to promote the protection and conservation of ecologically significant habitats throughout the Fraser Valley. Financial support for the Stewardship 101 workshop is provided by Vancity.

The event takes place on Wednesday, Dec. 4 with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. The event runs from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Junction Shopping Centre. More location details will be provided upon registration.

Admission is $5 per person, and registration is required.
