School-aged children in Mission will be heading back to class on Tuesday. Coinciding with the start of school is the beginning of a new year for the Rotary Club of Mission Starfish Pack program.
This program was initiated to make sure school kids have adequate food at home during the weekend.
Students who need some assistance receive a backpack full of food – breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks – to last the weekend.
In an effort to support the program, a new children’s book has been created.
Ken Selvaraja, a Rotarian and owner of Lanka Jewels, and Shanice McIntyre, a local art student, have collaborated to bring kids the story of how the program got its name.
The book is titled The Sturgeon and the Starfish and the hero of this tale is a character named Stan the sturgeon, a young sturgeon who lives in the Fraser River under the Mission Bridge.
The narrative story book has 12 pages, and can be enjoyed by any age group.
The book is available at Lanka Jewels in Mission. The price is $10 and all profits will to the Mission Starfish Pack program.
