Rotary raises $20K for FRHP heritage walk

Fraser River Heritage Park now has a heritage walk, thanks in large part to the Mission Mid Day Rotary, which raised $20,000.

The Rotary Heritage Walk is a rambling stroll with 16 storyboards that feature information about the park area, history and cultural highlights.

Rotary has been working on the project for two years but has been a plan of the Mission Heritage Association for several years, says organizer Debbie Trenholm.

"We were looking for a community project and the money we were raising could stay in the community," she said.

Each storyboard has been co-sponsored by a business or individual in Mission, raising roughly $7,000.

All historical information was provided by the Heritage Park Society, which gave insight into well-known landmarks such as the Memorial Gardens, gymnasiums and park cemetery.

"People don't really know, they see a cemetery there but they don't know a lot about it."

Rotary will eventually provide a mulch pathway so the walk is easy to follow, but for now visitors can receive a map and follow it to each of the storyboards.

The signs are expected to last about 10 years before needing replacement, but Trenholm said one already needed to be replaced due to vandals.

The grand opening happens Sept. 11 at 1 p.m. at the main entrance. There will be refreshments and park maps.

Mission Mid Day Rotary is comprised of 34 volunteers who sponsor community events and international aid for polio eradication.
