ScienceTalks Abbotsford holds online presentations about research and technology

Series features research chairs from University of the Fraser Valley

A series of online and informal talks designed to engage the public in learning about recent research in science begins Sept. 1.

ScienceTalks Abbotsford: A Virtual Science Cafe features talks given by different research chairs from University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), providing an opportunity to explore the latest ideas in science, research and technology.

Each talk is followed by a question-and-answer session.

The series is held the first Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. from September to December. Registration is free at sciencetalks.ca and is required to receive the Zoom video-conferencing link.

The topics are:

Pandemics and Precaution – Sept. 1 with Dr. Cindy Jardine, Canada research chair in health and community at UFV

The Future of Agriculture – Oct. 6 with Dr. Lenore Newman, Canada research chair in food security and the environment at UFV

From the Lab to the Market: Building an Innovation Ecosystem in the Fraser Valley – Nov. 3 with Dr. Jon Thomas, UFV BC regional innovation chair in Canada-India Partnership

Indigenous History : Building Reconciliation and Dismantling Settler Colonialism – Dec. 1 with Dr. Keith Carlson, Canada research chair in Indigenous and community-engaged history and chair of the Peace and Reconciliation Centre at UFV

The project received initial financial assistance from the City of Abbotsford, Vancouver Foundation, and Abbotsford Community Foundation through the Responsive Neighbourhood Small Grants Fund, a project that encourages neighbourhoods to create positive social connections and build community strength.

Other public and private institutions have decided to participate as well.
