Street Hope receives $3K grant from Mission Foundation

The New Heights Street Hope Ministries has received a $3,000 grant from the Mission Community Foundation for the breakfast program.

In winter 2008, workers learned guests of the Extreme Weather Program had to be checked out by 7 a.m. Street Hope asked New Heights Church if the guests could be brought down to the church office, known as Station X, until the Friendship Centre opened.

When winter ended, both groups were happy with the arrangement and decided to continue the breakfast program, which provides food six days a week from 8 to 10 a.m. to approximately 70 people.

Breakfast is kept simple: cold cereals, toast, peanut butter, coffee, tea, juice, and oatmeal occasionally. Providing a home-like atmosphere, the team have helped change lives, teach social skills, and encourage clients as they find recovery, mend relationships, and even jobs.

Street Hope first came to Mission in 2004 with weekly counselling groups which still meet every Tuesday on North Railway Avenue.
