Veteran Maritime group Còig is coming to town on Tuesday, March 12 as part of the Mission Folk Music Festival’s Roots and Branches Concert Series.
With the release of their new album Rove, this Nova Scotia band has cemented itself in the Celtic and traditional musical worlds.
With multiple awards to their name, Còig is like no other, thanks to the unique mix of four talented players. Fiddlers Crissy Crowley and Rachel Davis each explore elements of the traditional world with roots, folk, and world music influencing their take on Maritime music. Jason Roach, on piano, draws on his jazz background, while their string player, Darren McMullen (guitar, banjo, mandolin), has played with rock groups to folk singer David Francey.
Còig’s music is a combination of influences that could only come from these four players. It’s traditional for sure, but it’s performed in a lot of non-traditional ways.
“We really feed a lot on the energy we get from the crowd. Everybody is hootin’ and hollerin’ and clappin’ and stompin’ and goin’ on,” McMullen said. “We want our shows to be more where we’re all just having a party together.
“The best in trad music, in a non-traditional way. That’s Còig.”
This all-ages show takes place at the Ruskin Community Hall at 28395 96th Ave. in Ruskin. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased on line at https://coigconcert.bpt.me.
