Mission Secondary’s Cinderella musical dazzles Clarke Theatre

Hours of rehearsal pay off with weekend shows for high school musical theatre class

The show must go on, even if it’s an abridged version.

Mission Secondary School’s musical theatre class was set to perform Cinderella at Clarke Theatre last Friday morning (March 1) when a fire alarm went off before the performance. The audience was forced outside for roughly a half hour before the theatre could be reloaded.

Artistic director Becky Meyer says the students took it in stride, completing act one and then a little bit of act two.

“It truly was a group effort. This group was really special to us. They just rose up to every challenge we put in front of them,” Meyer said.

The class performed again on Friday and Saturday night (March 2) in front of a crowd of roughly 500 and 700 people respectively.

“They had just a stellar performance,” Meyer said. “[Saturday] was their best performance and super strong. Then they were all very sad that it was over.”

In the past, MSS musical theatre classes performed High School Musical, Mamma Mia, Grease and Chicago. Preparation for the musical required hundreds of hours of rehearsal time, in addition to work on props and costumes.

“This show had a lot of roles — it’s kind of an ensemble show. So it gave us the opportunity to showcase lots of different kids, because we had a lot of strong leads this year. We knew that we wanted to hopefully give something that gives them all a little bit of an opportunity to shine,” Meyer said.
