A homeless man in Mission was struck in the head with a baton multiple times by another man on Sunday morning (Sept. 17).

According to Mission RCMP’s weekly “Community Connection”, the man was treated for head injuries at the hospital and has since been released.

Police investigators believe that the baton-wielder was known to the victim but the motive for the attack is unknown and no one has been arrested at this time.

The incident was one of the Mission RCMP’s 271 calls for service from Sept. 11 to 17.

The detachment also responded to a road rage incident last Tuesday afternoon (Sept. 12) on Horne Street near First Avenue with one driver wielding a screwdriver.

Police say the driver of one vehicle was allegedly tailgating another vehicle and yelled at its driver.

Things escalated until both drivers stopped and left their vehicles, with one brandishing a screwdriver. The drivers eventually backed down and no one was injured.

“It takes two to tango, and usually it takes two to road rage,” Mission RCMP Cpl. Harrison Mohr said in a news release. “If you are the aggressor — you’ll know because you’re the one who will be doing the honking, the yelling and the tailgating – take a breath and give your fellow citizen a break.”

Mohr advises the public to avoid stopping to challenge the other driver to a fight.

Meanwhile, two men were arrested after a pair of wagons were stolen from Mission Leisure Centre last Wednesday morning (Sept. 13).

Police say the two men took the wagons full of items and fled through a side door. An officer attended the Leisure Centre and watched footage of the theft.

Shortly after, they found one of the men walking on Logan Avenue with one of the wagons. The man was arrested and the stolen items were recovered.

RCMP located and arrested the second man later in the day while possessing the second wagon full of stolen items.

The following day (Sept. 14) in a separate incident, Mission RCMP arrested a 42-year-old woman from Lake Errock for for possession of stolen property and driving while prohibited.

Police were conducting proactive patrols in the Deroche area when they observed a suspicious pickup truck stopped at a gas station and confirmed the truck had been stolen out of Vancouver.

On Friday (Sept. 15), police also nabbed a potential impaired driver after reports of a red Toyota Echo with two people passed out inside in a store parking lot.

Police say the driver showed signs of drug impairment and a bag of suspected methamphetamine was visible in the center console.

The driver performed poorly on a roadside sobriety test and was issued a 24-hour driving prohibition and the vehicle was impounded.
