A man in his 20s pulled a knife and threatened a loss prevention officer at a grocery store in Mission last Thursday (Nov. 23), according to Mission RCMP’s weekly “Community Connection”.

At approximately 3:30 p.m., the loss prevention officer (LPO) witnessed the man trying to leave the store without paying for a bag of groceries. The knife was pulled after the LPO confronted the man. Police say the man fled on an electric bike and no one was injured in the incident.

Mission RCMP are working to identify the offender through CCTV footage.

The grocery store incident was one of 315 calls for service for the Mission RCMP last week (Nov. 20-26).

Earlier in the week, police arrested a 50-year-old man after they were called to an alarm at a building supply store in Mission.

At 2:30 a.m. last Tuesday (Nov. 21), officers found a man matching the description of the suspect who had been seen by security walking away from the store.

Police say the man initially provided a fake name and the ID of a 30-year-old but eventually gave his real name. The man had two arrest warrants from Vancouver for possession of stolen property and dangerous driving. He was arrested and taken to court.

The following day (Nov. 22), police responded to reports of a man loading a handgun in the parking lot of a business on Horne Street. Mission RCMP found the vehicle and discovered a handgun-shaped lighter. The occupants of the vehicle turned it over to police.

“This is an important reminder of the dangers of carrying any type of replica gun in public, as other members of the public and police likely can’t tell from a distance whether or not it’s a real firearm. Officers have to treat these situations as if it is a real firearm until confirmed otherwise,” Mission RCMP says.

Meanwhile, on Friday (Nov. 24), Mission RCMP arrested a motorcycle driver for driving without a license or insurance. The driver allegedly resisted arrest and had an outstanding warrant for driving while prohibited.

The motorcycle was impounded and the man was issued a court date for obstructing a peace officer and driving while prohibited.

On Nov. 26, a witness saw a woman trying to get into the front door of a residence on 7th Avenue near Horne Street, while a man went around back to try to get in.

Mission RCMP attended and located a man hiding in bushes on the property, who tried to flee but was quickly caught by officers. The woman was found inside the residence and was also taken into custody.
