Firefighters extinguished a garage fire on Ainsworth Street in Mission during the early hours of Wednesday morning (Feb. 28) despite challenging wintry conditions.

Mission Fire Rescue Service (MFRS) responded to the blaze just before 2 a.m. but poor road conditions due to the snow hampered initial response, a Facebook post from the department says.

Upon arrival, crews discovered a detached garage and multiple vehicles on fire with the main house partially exposed to the flames. Downed power lines were also a challenge for firefighters.

Crews doused the fire from a distance, limiting the spread and protecting the house. MFRS quickly knocked down the remaining fire when BC Hydro arrived.

Three residents and two dogs were assisted by Mission Emergency Support Services (ESS). No injuries were reported.

“A big thank you to public works for getting a plow truck to the scene quickly to assist with clearing the snow from the main roads for the apparatus,” MFRS Asst. Chief Nick Rychkun said in the Facebook post.
