A collision between a motorhome and pickup truck in Hatzic on Sunday night (April 21) disrupted highway and rail traffic.

Mission RCMP responded to a two-vehicle collision at 10:45 pm on Lougheed Highway near Coleman Road, according to the detachment’s weekly “Community Connection” crime recap.

An older motorhome drifted off-road and over-corrected, sending the motorhome into a westbound pickup truck. Police say the truck struck a utility pole and went down an embankment, stopping next to the train tracks.

An approaching train stopped just in time — 50 metres from where the truck was. Mission RCMP credits quick communication from witnesses, police, train dispatchers, and the train engineer to get the train to stop.

Both drivers were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Highway and rail traffic was disrupted for a few hours while the crash was investigated.

The crash was one of 280 calls for service Mission RCMP recorded last week (April 15- 21).

On April 16, Mounties say a well-known shoplifter snatched a basket-full of items from a local grocery store and ran.

The same man stole about $700 worth of merchandise from a big-box retailer the following day, according to police. He returned to the grocery store again on Sunday (April 21) but was arrested by Mission RCMP after the store’s Loss Prevention Officer noticed him.

“The offender is already on court-conditions stemming from a Probation Order and a Suspended Sentence not to attend either location. Mission RCMP are compiling all of the evidence and will be recommending additional charges against the man,” the detachment said.

Meanwhile, a man was arrested after a break-and-enter on Sylvester Road on April 19 at approximately 2 a.m.

Mission RCMP say one suspect fled in a pickup truck but the other missed their ride. An officer from the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service attended and began searching the area.

Police discovered discarded items used during the break-and-enter, along with an abandoned shoe. The police dog tracked down a shoeless man hiding near a tree shortly after.

Between April 15 and 17, another attempted theft occurred near Stave Lake Street and Watt Street. Police say the suspects attempted to steal utility wire from the same location as a previous wire theft.

“However, on this occasion, it appears as though the suspects were ill-equipped to actually transport the wire they cut, and nothing was stolen, although the damage to the lines was still significant,” Mission RCMP said.

Mounties also nabbed an impaired driver on April 20 at approximately 2 a..m. Police say a witness reported a suspected impaired driver picking up a late-night meal.

Mission RCMP found a 40-year-old man in the driver’s seat of a Ford pickup truck who displayed symptoms of being impaired by liquor.

The man failed two roadside screening tests, was issued a 90-day driving prohibition and his truck was impounded for 30 days.
