A crosswalk collision early Tuesday (May 9) injured three young pedestrians in Chilliwack, according to RCMP, but it was not a hit-and-run.

The driver who was travelling westbound, remained at the scene, and was co-operating with police.

Two of the children were tended to initially by fire and ambulance personnel and later transported to hospital in Chilliwack with minor injuries. Both were released by early afternoon.

The third victim had “more serious” but non-life-threatening injuries, but is also expected to be released later in the day.

City of Chilliwack has been working to improve pedestrian safety in this area in recent years.

“We were very sorry to hear about this incident and wish the youth involved a full recovery,” said Mayor Ken Popove, in a statement from city hall.

The three youth were struck on a marked crosswalk that was equipped with rapid flashing beacon equipment, that had been installed in 2019.

City officials added delineators to the intersection in 2017, in order to prevent vehicles from passing when cars are stopped at the crosswalk.

Upgrades to Keith Wilson Road between Tyson Road to Webster Road are set to start in 2028 as per the city’s 10-year Financial Plan, including pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

Chilliwack emergency responders were first called to the incident on Keith Wilson Road at Lindys Drive at about 7:50 a.m. RCMP were still holding the scene several hours later.

“We are asking motorists to find an alternate route, as we investigate this incident,” said Cpl. Martin Godard.

They’re also seeking dash-cam footage.

“Impairment is not considered to be a contributing factor in this collision. The incident is still under investigation.”

Keith Wilson Road was blocked between Carter and Lickman Roads, as officers were dispatched to collect evidence and complete related tasks of the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Services (ICARS).

After the crash they initially called for air ambulance, and a landing zone to be set up at Unsworth Elementary School which was later cancelled.

Anyone with information, including dash cam footage, from the stretch of Keith Wilson between Tyson Road and Lindys Drive, between the 7:30 a.m. to 7:50 a.m. is asked to contact the Chilliwack RCMP at 604 792-4611 and quote file #23-17705.
