The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC concluded its investigation into the June 2022 death of a man in Mission and determined that Mission RCMP weren’t responsible for the man’s death.
According to a news release on Wednesday (March 29), the IIO’s chief civilian director reviewed the evidence — including video footage, forensic scene analysis, civilian witness statements, medical information, and police records — and made the determination that no shots were fired by police during the incident.
“Neither police actions nor inactions were responsible for the man’s death,” the IIO said in the release.
On June 27, 2022, police responded to a call near Maple Street and Fifth Avenue at approximately 10:00 a.m. after a woman screamed for someone to call 911.

When police arrived, the woman let them into the home. As police searched the home, a man within the residence sustained a self-inflicted gunshot injury. He was airlifted to a hospital and pronounced dead the following day.
The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
