An alleged stabbing on Saturday night (May 6) in Mission left a 38-year-old man with a serious injury, according to Mission RCMP’s weekly ‘Community Connection’.
Police received reports of a stabbing inside a Little Terrace residence at approximately 11:30 p.m. An altercation between between the victim and another 38-year-old man led to a serious injury.
The victim left the residence at sought help at a neighbour’s house. Mission RCMP say the two men were casual acquaintances of each other.
The suspect was arrested inside the residence and several charges have been recommended by police.
The altercation was one of 300 calls for service for Mission RCMP from May 1 to 7. Other calls of interests included a series of catch basin cover thefts, an impaired driver resting on a patch of grass and a collision with a cedar tree.
On May 3, a contractor doing street maintenance notified Mission RCMP of a recent rash of catch basin covers being stolen.
“Covers have been repeatedly stolen from several different areas of Mission and are likely being sold for their scrap metal value,” Mission RCMP media relations officer Harrison Mohr wrote in a news release.
Police are investigating the thefts and encourage anyone who witnesses suspicious activity to notify RCMP immediately.
On the afternoon of May 6, police were called by a motorist that witnessed another vehicle swerving in and out of its lane on Lougheed Highway near 287 Street.
Mission RCMP located the vehicle and when they pulled it over, it drove up and over a curb and came to rest on a patch of grass.
“This is an example of what investigators call a clue,” Mohr said.
Police say the driver was already prohibited from driving and showed symptoms of being impaired by drugs. He performed poorly during a roadside sobriety test and refused to comply with further drug testing.
He was issued a 90-day driving prohibition, his vehicle was impounded and he was issued a court date in Abbotsford provincial court.
Meanwhile, on Friday (May 5) police responded to a single-vehicle collision on Dewdney Trunk Road near Welch Avenue.
The driver stated that he swerved after a deer jumped out onto the road in front of his vehicle.
“While the driver was successful at avoiding the deer, he was not as successful at avoiding the sneaky cedar tree that had quietly rooted itself next to the roadway sometime over the past 75 years,” Mohr wrote.
Both the driver and passenger received minor arm injuries but were able to get out of the vehicle on their own and waited for friends to pick them up.
Mission RCMP have received an increase in reports related to wild animals on roadways and in the area recently.
“Drivers are reminded to expect the unexpected – even though that straight stretch of road might seem quiet and safe to push your speed a little higher than the limit, all it takes is one large animal to run out in front of your vehicle to cause you to panic,” Mohr says. “Slow down and be safe.”
