The Mission RCMP published a list of prevention tips for homeowners on Aug. 15, stating it is the first in a series that will be published over the next several weeks.

The first set of tips is addressed to homeowners on how to deal with property crime.

Property thefts are usually crimes of opportunity, police say, and often start when a thief walking spots something they think sell off for easy profit, according to the Mission RCMP notice.

“When a stranger comes onto your property and takes your stuff, not only is there a financial cost, but it takes away from your feeling of safety and privacy at home.”

The first suggestion is for homeowners to walk around their properties to identify things that could be valuable for thieves, and ask themselves: is there a way to get this out of sight or locked away and secured?

Highly prized items include tools, power equipment, bikes, metals and construction materials, according to police.

The second tip is to make sure all your property is marked by serial numbers, or by engraving something unique into items. This way, when stolen material is recovered, police can actually return the items.

“If someone takes your Dewalt cordless drill, and police find someone in possession of a similar one, we may not be able to return it to you if it looks like every other Dewalt drill,” the notice said.

“But if you’ve recorded the serial number or spray-painted the bottom of it bright pink, our officers will have a better chance of getting it back to you! (Blue polka dots or gold stars are also acceptable).”

The third suggestion is to mount some form of visual surveillance on the property.

Property crime occurs around the clock, and the day and night-time quality on newer cameras is described as “very good” – even being able to send alerts to homeowners.

“If you’ve recorded the serial number or spray-painted the bottom of it bright pink, our officers will have a better chance of getting it back to you!”

Lastly, the Mission RCMP is encouraging people to report suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods, and not to underestimate their own intuition.

“Chances are you’re right. Who knows…you could even help reunite someone with their bright pink Dewalt cordless drill!”
