The Murray Street overpass is getting an upgrade and seismic retrofit.
The work is being done by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure in consultation with the District of Mission.
According to a report to council, the design of the project is being done in two phases by the ministry. The government is now asking for Mission’s input on how it should be constructed.
Mission council is choosing to have the work done in three stages, which would take about 11 months, as opposed two a two-stage process that would take eight months.
The three-stage option would keep the overpass open to all traffic and pedestrians during construction.
The first phase will target the east side of the bridge and take about four months to complete. The west side of the bridge worked on during the second phase of construction, which is also expected to last four months. During this time, the sidewalk will be closed and pedestrian traffic will be diverted to the West Coast Express Overpass, which is about a 400-metre detour.
The median will be worked on for three months during the final phase of construction.
The Murray Street overpass is a 159 metre long bridge that was constructed in 1973.
A timeline for the construction has not been released.
